Project Info

History

To date, all development on Visual RPN Calculator has been the work of one developer as a part time project. The first windows store submission back in July 2016 was pretty basic, but over time more features have been added on a regular basis - sometimes in response to requests from users (if you want something, click on the feedback button on the calculator under the hamburger menu or email john@linstrum.net).

Planned Future Features

Lots of minor features and one really gigantic feature are on the developer's wish list. When they will be implemented is uncertain, as the developer is working on multiple projects at any given time.

Planned Minor Features:

The developer tinkers on and off adding new minor features as time and inspiration dictates. If there is a feature you would really like to see, let the developer know (john@linstrum.net). Anyway, here are some of the ideas that are currently in the hopper:

  • More functional programming examples and functionality
  • Example videos
  • Support for hex and binary input and associated logic calculations
  • Support for calculating errors in calculations
  • String functions
  • More graphing options (polar coordinates, graphing relations that aren't functions)

Planned Giant Feature: Making Visual RPN Calculator Cross Platform

Right now The Uno Platform looks like an interesting way to make the calculator multi-platform (specifically working on Android). Uno looks promising, but ports like this tend to be pretty problem prone and time consuming so it might not happen for a while.

Making Calculator Open Source (or open-ish)

At some point it would be nice to make the source code for the calculator available under a creative commons license which would allow source code to be modified for private use (but not for public distribution). Then at a later date it could be released under a less restrictive (copyleft style) license. All of this is dependent on getting time to setup a public repository, etc., but it is also dependent on establishing Visual RPN Calculator well enough that no one will be tempted to copy it as "Bob's Calculator". If you would like the app to be open source so you can help the developer improve it, let him know and he will prioritize getting this to happen.
